Why do I need a TV provider?
If you're in a location where you can pick up your local broadcast stations by antenna, you can watch these directly for free by connecting the antenna to the coaxial antenna input on your television. If you can't do this, you'll need a tv provider of some sort to bring these stations to you.

The TV Provider maps "broadcast genre" to "canonical genre" internally. TV Inputs are responsible for populating "broadcast genre" with the value in the underlying broadcast standard, and the "canonical genre" field will automatically be populated with the correct associated genre from android.
Viewers who verify their subscription to a TV provider get access to a deeper catalog of video content, including more full episodes and specials. If you cannot log in because your TV provider is not currently supported or you do not have a TV package, you will still have a lot of video to watch.
Cable provider or TV network channels

As far as using a Smart TV without cable or a set-top box goes, you can do it. There are plenty of apps that offer live TV channels for a subscription. But these need to be individually subscribed to, making a cable connection a more economical option in the long run.
